Bułki na Parze (Polish Steamed Buns)

Ingredients

Starter

1 packet yeast

1/2 cup warm milk

1 tbsp flour

1 tbsp sugar

Dough

2 cups flour

1 egg

3 tbsp melted butter

2 tbsp sugar

Pinch of salt

Sauce

Strawberries (a bunch)

Sour cream (3-4 tbsp)

Sugar (if needed)

Instructions

Mix starter ingredients (yeast, flour, milk, sugar) together. Let stand ~10 minutes to let the yeast proof. It should get very bubbly.

Mix dough ingredients (flour, egg, butter, salt, sugar) together with the starter. Stir with a wooden spoon until combined, then kneed with a dough hook for ~5 minutes. At the end you should have a springy dough that springs back when you poke it. Cover the mixer bowl with plastic wrap, and let rise until doubled (~1.5 hours).

Once the dough has risen, turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and divide into buns (I usually do 6), then form them into buns. First roll them in your hands until they’re roughly round ball, then make a nice bun shape by pinching the dough around each side and pulling together at the bottom of the bun (sorry if that makes no sense).

Once the buns are made, cover them with a kitchen towel (on the same work surface) and let them rise ~30 minutes.

Steam for 12 minutes in a steamer basket over simmering water. They’ll stick a little, but if they’re really stuck let them steam more. Eat immediately.

To make the sauce, combine strawberries and sour cream in a blender. Add sugar if needed (if the strawberries aren’t sweet enough). Pour over the steamed buns
